The constancy of the parent-child relationship is key to a child’s sense of security, feelings of self-worth, and development. Yet, many children today are deeply and adversely affected by lack of quality contact with a parent due to situations out of their control, including divorce, separation or family violence and abuse.
Locations
Someplace Safe operates Parenting Time Centers in 5 West Central communities, including Fergus Falls, Glenwood, Morris, Ortonville, and Perham.
Safety First
These centers are specifically designed to ensure that children have access to their parents in a safe and conflict-free environment. Trained providers offer a range of services to facilitate this access. Each Parenting Time Center provides a neutral and secure location for the drop-off, pick-up, and visitation of children. Various measures, such as staggered arrival times and separate entrances, are implemented to maintain a sense of safety and privacy. During the exchange of children, parents have no contact with each other.
The Parenting Time Center and its dedicated staff actively promote respectful communication within families. They assist in establishing a routine for parenting time and also provide referrals to other valuable community resources. Through these efforts, the Parenting Time Center aims to support healthy parent-child relationships and ensure the well-being of children.
Offered by Someplace Safe
The Parenting Time Centers are a program offered by Someplace Safe. They function independently from Someplace Safe’s Advocacy programs, having separate staff to ensure there are no conflicts of interest and to maintain confidentiality. However, in several communities, the Parenting Time Center may be situated near Someplace Safe’s local Advocacy offices or even co-located with them.

Importance of Parenting Time Centers
Safety and Conflict-Free Environment: Parenting Time Centers provide a safe and neutral space for parents and children to interact. By offering a controlled environment, they minimize the risk of conflict or potential harm during parenting time exchanges or visits.
Consistency for Children: Parenting Time Centers promote consistency in the parent-child relationship. They ensure that children have regular and reliable access to both parents, which is crucial for their emotional well-being, sense of security, and healthy development.
Professional Supervision: Trained staff members are present at Parenting Time Center to supervise and document the interactions between parents and children. This supervision helps ensure the safety and appropriate conduct of all parties involved, providing an extra layer of protection for children.
Conflict Resolution: In situations where there may be high conflict or contentious relationships between parents, Parenting Time Center can act as a neutral ground. This helps reduce conflicts and provide a structured environment where parents can focus on the well-being and best interests of their children.
Referral to Resources: Parenting Time Center often offers additional support services and referrals to other community resources. These resources can include counseling, parenting education, and assistance with navigating the legal system. This holistic approach aims to address various needs and challenges that parents and children may face.
Overall, Parenting Time Centers play a crucial role in facilitating safe and healthy parent-child interactions, promoting consistency, and offering support to families in need.
