Alexandria MN
Someplace Safe opened its first Thrift Store in Alexandria, Minnesota, in 2010. The store came to fruition in order to provide much needed clothing and household items to clients while also helping to provide sustainable funding for the agency. Community members, organizations and businesses embraced the idea of having a physical location that could help to provide much needed items to victims and survivors in their local communities. Generous donations of funds, items and volunteer hours were crucial in the beginning, and remain so today. The Alexandria Store has since moved to its current location at 690 Voyager Drive.
Morris MN
In 2013, a second store was opened in Morris, Minnesota, to help meet the growing demand of client needs as well as community requests for a secondary location for shopping and supporting. The Morris community and University of Minnesota, Morris, campus are essential to staffing in through service-learning, volunteers and job training opportunities. Located at 708 Atlantic Ave, the Morris location offers a unique shopping experience, downtown location convenient need, but local shoppers, students and supporters.
Fergus Falls MN
The newest thrift store opened in March of 2022 in Fergus Falls. The agency was founded in Fergus Falls as a domestic violence emergency shelter in 1979. Fergus Falls and surrounding areas remain the locations where the highest number of victims and survivors of crime seek services. By opening this store, these clients have an accessible location to get items to restart their lives through the agency voucher program. When this location was announced in Fergus Falls, generosity poured from the community, including donors, volunteers and shoppers. The store is located at 204 West Cavour.
Survivor Impact
Many survivors face financial hardships related to victimization, such as: job loss, the transition to a single income household, missed time at work, injuries, damaged property, legal fees, etc. In some cases, survivors need to flee a dangerous situation quickly and with little possessions. Someplace Safe helps survivors rebuild their lives by helping to provide needed essentials. Clients are able to access Someplace Safe Thrift Store vouchers to obtain clothing, furniture, household items, and other necessities in their time of need.
COMMUNITY IMPACT
In the last year, Someplace Safe Thrift Stores provided over $7,800 in vouchers to over 220 local individuals in need.
