A trip to a Someplace Safe Thrift Store is about so much more than finding incredible bargains. Every purchase, donation, and volunteer hour helps support a mission that changes lives across West Central Minnesota.
The proceeds from Someplace Safe’s thrift stores directly support the organization’s programs for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, and other crimes. Revenue helps fund emergency services, advocacy, housing support, prevention education, youth programming, and resources that empower individuals and families to rebuild their lives.
At the same time, the thrift stores provide affordable shopping opportunities, encourage sustainability by giving gently used items a second life, and create welcoming spaces where neighbors can support one another. It’s a simple way for community members to make a meaningful impact, whether you’re shopping for a bargain, donating household items, or giving your time as a volunteer.
Three Stores, One Mission
Each Someplace Safe Thrift Store has its own unique character while sharing the same purpose: supporting survivors and strengthening local communities.
Alexandria
Someplace Safe opened its first Thrift Store in Alexandria, Minnesota, in 2010. The store came to fruition in order to provide much needed clothing and household items to clients while also helping to provide sustainable funding for the agency. Community members, organizations and businesses embraced the idea of having a physical location that could help to provide much needed items to victims and survivors in their local communities. Generous donations of funds, items and volunteer hours were crucial in the beginning, and remain so today. The Alexandria Store has since moved to its current location at 690 Voyager Drive in Alexandria.
Morris
In 2013, a second store was opened in Morris, Minnesota, to help meet the growing demand of client needs as well as community requests for a secondary location for shopping and supporting. The Morris community and University of Minnesota, Morris, campus are essential to staffing in through service-learning, volunteers and job training opportunities. Located at 708 Atlantic Ave, the Morris location offers a unique shopping experience, downtown location convenient need, but local shoppers, students and supporters.
Fergus Falls
The newest thrift store opened in March of 2022 in Fergus Falls. Someplace Safe was founded in Fergus Falls as a domestic violence emergency shelter in 1979. Fergus Falls and surrounding areas remain the locations where the highest number of victims and survivors of crime seek services. By opening this store, these clients have an accessible location to get items to restart their lives through the agency voucher program. When this location was announced in Fergus Falls, generosity poured from the community, including donors, volunteers and shoppers. The store is located at 204 West Cavour in Fergus Falls.
Volunteers Make It All Possible
Behind every organized rack of clothing and every carefully displayed shelf is a dedicated team of volunteers. Their time and talents help process donations, sort merchandise, create displays, assist customers, and keep the stores running smoothly.
